The official opening is next week-end but the ramp going unto the
island of Montreal opened on the Champlain bridge, yesterday. Looks
nice. I know Lyse and her friend were going back yesterday afternoon.
The Champlain bridge is the busiest in Canada, with 50 million crossings
per year.

I remember inaugurating the previous bridge, when it first opened. Boyfriend
and I were in a red sportscar with the top down. There was virtually no one
on the bridge and I told him to let her rip. He did! We were picked up by the cops
on the other side but let off with a warning and a grin. On thinking back, maybe
the patrol car driver had enjoyed his romp on the bridge as well!

assez inconfortable, sans doute en vue du fait que je porte
le nom de Louise. C'est quand même intéressant, la rivière
Richelieu à la fenêtre, d'apprécier ce qu'a été la vie du Cardinal.



Je médite aussi, en cette journée de Fête N., les débuts du
modernisme mathématique Européen. Oui, Cavalieri a été le premier
à entretenir les séries mathématiques mais un certain Roberval -
de famille modeste et bagarreur - a oeuvré avec les infnitésimaux
à la même époque.

Un article très troublant sur les inégalités du revenu
a paru hier dans le Guardian, UK. Assez réconfortant
pour nous, le phénomène serait surtout actif aux États-Unis
et au Royaume-Uni et non au Canada ou en Europe. Un
épi-phénomène de la globalisation!?

In both the US and the UK, from 1980 to 2016, the share of total 
income going to the top 1% has more than doubled. After allowing 
for inflation, the earnings of the bottom 90% in the US and UK have 
barely risen at all over the past 25 years. More generally, 50 years ago, 
a US CEO earned on average about 20 times as much as the typical 
worker. Today, the CEO earns 354 times as much.
